Devon and Cornwall Mining Sundowners, April

Now that we have the long light evenings, the Cornish Mining Sundowner is back at the Chain Locker pub in Falmouth. However last night was deemed to be a little too chilly to sit out but it was a great turnout of around 20, including many regulars and a few surprise guests.

It was good to see Pete Walsh after many years. Pete was in the Camborne School of Mines class of 1979, one of the group of first graduates in Mineral Processing Technology. In my posting of 6 years ago he asked if anyone knew of the whereabouts of Dave Dew, also one of the first graduates. Last night they met for the first time in 36 years and in the reunion photo below I am with Tony Clarke, retired experimental officer at CSM, Dave and Pete.

Pete left mineral processing some years ago and is now a development engineer with Neopartners Ltd, a producer of electronic systems for harsh environments. Dave is still very much involved with mineral processing. An eminent international biohydrometallurgist, he will be presenting a keynote at next year's Biohydromet '16 in Falmouth.

Also good to see Nick and Pauline Clarke, who are down in Cornwall for the weekend from their home in London. Nick is a former Director of CSM Associates and in 2013 was recipient of Mining Journal's CEO of the Year Award (posting of 28 December 2013).

Klaas van der Wielen is a sundowner regular. Still living in Falmouth, he was formerly with Selfrag, Switzerland, but recently took up an appointment as a processing engineer with the new Drakelands tungsten mine across the border in Devon. He is currently commuting the 75 miles to Hemerdon by car.

I will be at the Chain Locker a couple of times before the next sundowner, with Precious Metals '15 delegates on May 11th and Nickel Processing '15 delegates on May 13th, and anyone who is in the area is welcome to join us, at around 7pm. Hopefully it will be a little warmer by then so that we can sit outside by the quayside.

Earlier in the month the Devon mining sundowner regulars celebrated the release of Dartmoor Brewery’s ‘Tungsten Tipple’ at the Miners’ Arms, Hemerdon. The beer has been brewed ‘in recognition of the mine re-opening by Wolf Minerals’. Drakelands tungsten mine is scheduled to go on-stream this year (posting of 10 July 2014), and Process Plant Manager Charlie Northfield will be updating us on operations at Physical Separation '15 in June.
